Why pay attention to wellbeing?
Occupational stress poses a risk to most businesses and the cost of compensation being awarded is increasing. If you get it wrong, there is no upper limit for employee compensation under disability discrimination law, which incorporates stress.
ACAS now outline mental health problems cost the UK economy £30billion a year through lost productivity, recruitment and absence. In 2014, CIPD reported annual absence costs per employee as £609, with 2015 figures from the HSE giving a cost to UK Plc of over £12billion a year, with work related stress leading to 10.4 million days lost.
The Mental Health Foundation estimate nearly 3 in every 10 employees will experience a mental health problem in any one year, with work–life imbalance being one of the main causes of mental ill-health.
In addition to this, our own research completed in January 2015, identified the most adverse effect on morale is poor work-life balance, followed closely by employees and colleagues being made redundant.
